Why Use Lime Mortar on Traditional Buildings?

Traditional stone buildings were designed to work with breathable lime mortar. Unlike hard modern cement mortars, lime allows moisture within the wall to evaporate through the joints, helping to protect the surrounding stone.

Using an unsuitable cement mortar on older stonework can trap moisture and may contribute to deterioration of the stone over time. When repointing traditional properties, we aim to use an appropriate lime mortar and finish that works with the existing masonry while retaining the character of the building.
